Gran Canaria will be affected by a very strong Calima until Wednesday. For Wednesday, the Calima forecast predicts a daily average of 110 micrograms of PM10 per cubic metre there. This means the air quality will be very poor.
A strong Calima, carrying Saharan dust, is also set to affect conditions from Tuesday to Thursday on El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. The forecast is based on the Copernicus CAMS model and measurements from the European Environment Agency.
Levels of 90 micrograms of PM10 per cubic metre are expected in Tenerife on Tuesday, indicating poor air quality. The Calima follows on from the rain warning in the Canary Islands.
Gran Canaria: Calima set to remain strong on Thursday too
According to the forecast, Gran Canaria will continue to be affected by strong Calima on Thursday. On that day, the PM10 level is expected to be 94 micrograms per cubic metre, and air quality will be poor. On Fuerteventura, pollution levels are expected to reach 73 micrograms per cubic metre on Wednesday.
On Thursday, levels of 81 micrograms per cubic metre are expected for La Gomera and 77 micrograms per cubic metre for La Palma. On Lanzarote and El Hierro, levels are expected to be 69 micrograms per cubic metre on each island. As fine Saharan dust can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract, people with asthma, other respiratory or heart conditions, the elderly and pregnant women should avoid physical exertion outdoors. They should also keep windows and doors closed and drink plenty of fluids.
